HAPPY 25TH BIRTHDAY TV6!

MEDIA RELEASE

As the Minister with responsibility for Communications I would like to congratulate CCN TV6 on its 25 years of service to Trinidad and Tobago. Your very existence a quarter of a century later in an ever-changing media landscape is testament to your spirit of innovation and resilience.

In today’s world, access to information and freedom of the press have never been more important; they are key pillars of people empowerment and democracy which make your role as a medium of trusted information even more critical.

Over the last 25 years your newsroom has worked hard at providing accurate, fair and balanced reportage that affects the way citizens see the world. Your challenges are even greater in a landscape of new media and citizen journalism.

I am confident that you will rise to the occasion recognising as the UN General Secretary said on World Press Freedom Day 2016 that “human rights, democratic societies and sustainable development depend on the free flow of information... a free, independent and safe media environment is essential.”

The Government of which I am a part also recognises the importance of media. We are cognisant that CCN TV6 and all other media houses for that matter need an environment that allows its journalists to pursue stories unhindered and we are committed to ensuring you operate in an environment that fosters and encourages this.

As a former Head of News and Current Affairs at CCN TV6, I know of and appreciate some of the challenges that you have faced and overcome, and I wish to assure you that the policies of this government will always promote a free and unfettered media.
