Excellence. Innovation. Transformation. Technology-Driven.

These are the words that were echoed throughout the official launch of this year’s Public Service Week celebrations.

The Government of Trinidad and Tobago through the Ministry of Public Administration and Communications launched its annual Public Service Week celebrations on Tuesday 21st June 2016 at the Audio Visual Room of the NALIS Library, Port-of-Spain. This year’s theme focused on “Innovating for Excellence through Service Delivery.”

Delivering the opening remarks, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration and Communications, Ms. Lydia Jacobs keenly expressed that the theme was chosen to reflect the “pursuit of a more integrated, responsive, technology-driven and results-oriented Public Service.” She also stated that Ministries and agencies participating in the week’s Open House would be presented with an opportunity to showcase their innovative services such as E-Tax programme, FAIRSHARE programme, TTBizLink, ttconnect and others. Ms. Jacobs encouraged those in attendance to continue to work together to improve service delivery in the public sector thus realising a better Trinidad and Tobago.

In his Feature Address, the Hon. Maxie Cuffie, Minister of Public Administration and Communications underscored the need for the public service to rise above the public’s negative perception of the quality of service in Trinidad and Tobago and acknowledged persons who have contributed to its continued growth and development.

Suggesting a way forward, the Minister urged senior public officials “to mentor new recruits as well as currently employed officers and guide and grow them into productive, ethical and conscientious employees who will put the good of country before personal aggrandisement.” He also encouraged Permanent Secretaries to renew their responsibility of public service transformation and work together with the Ministry of Public Administration and Communications to effect this task.

The audience at the official launch also enjoyed live musical entertainment by Kevin Dodds, an employee of the Ministry of Public Administration and Communications and Mr. Akil Warner, a former employee. The ceremony marked four days of empowering, engaging and exciting activities to commemorate Public Service Week 2016.
